Lead Your Way workshop topics

Identity and pride

Identity is the different aspects which makes us individuals. This includes things you are or want to be proud of, as well as things you’re still learning and figuring out about yourself.

In this workshop you will explore your identities in various activities, including how you can take pride in these identities. And look at how even without knowing everything about yourself or using labels, you can still be proud, and connect with your identities.

We hope you’ll learn who you are is your greatest strength.

Internalised ableism

What is internalised ableism? It is an internal form of discrimination where a person will beat themselves up for having a disability. It is something that as disabled people we can all struggle with from time to time, and is common to experience.

In this workshop, you will explore what internalised ableism looks like and how you can work towards overcoming inner shame, and towards acceptance as well as recognising ways your disability may not actually stop you from doing things.

Community supports

Connecting and feeling supported by other people like ourselves can be really important for young women and non-binary people with disabilities.

In this workshop you will learn what community supports are, how they benefit us and how they can help us include and speak up for ourselves and other people. You will reflect on what is important for you when seeking community supports, and how you can use this knowledge in the future.

This workshop also covers allyship - what it is and how it can be done well.

Navigating formal supports

There are a lot of supports and schemes for people with disabilities provided by federal and state governments, as well as other service based organisations. It can be difficult to know what they are, how they work, and how to apply for them.

This workshop will go through various supports, including

  • NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme)
  • DSP (Disability Support Pension)
  • Companion card – discounted prices for support people at paid events
  • Travel pass – MYKI discounts
  • Multi Purpose Taxi Program – taxi and Uber discounts
  • Disability Parking permits
  • MLAK (Master Lock Access Keys) – access to locked accessible facilities such as bathrooms, elevators, play equipment, etc.
  • Traveller’s Aid – support when using public transport at certain stations

You’ll also hear others share their experiences (both positive and negative) of applying for and using these supports.

You will be able to ask questions to panellists, as well as a professional disability advocate.
