Women and girls with disabilities are twice as likely to experience violence as those without disabilities.

This is a series of two (2) workshops, for social and community service professionals, to learn about how gender and disability inequality drives violence, and how you can prevent it. See below for session details.

Part 1: Wednesday 19 March, 10:00am–3:00pm 

Part 2: Thursday 20 March10:00am–3:00pm 

Both sessions include a lunch break and additional short breaks. Lunch will be provided. Please advise us of any dietary requirements via the registration form. 

Location: Queen Victoria Women's Centre, Ballam-Ballam (Ground Floor), 210 Lonsdale St, Melbourne, VIC 3000

Cost: $350 employed professionals, $250 student/ concession

What you will learn 

Session 1: Introduction to Prevention of Violence against Women with Disabilities + Gendered and Ableist Drivers of Violence

  • How gender and disability inequality intersect to create disadvantage for women with disabilities
  • Impacts of violence against women with disabilities
  • New models of understanding disability and addressing ableism
  • How our everyday actions and practice can contribute to violence against women with disabilities
Session 2: Gender and Disability Prevention in Action
  • How gender and disability equitable practice can create change to end violence
  • Introducing concepts of inclusive and accessible practice
  • Strategies and tools to prevent violence against women with disabilities
  • Resistance and backlash
  • Bystander action

The series is facilitated by women and non-binary people with disabilities and centres the voices of lived experience. It is evidence-based, aligning with the latest research on disability, Our Watch’s Changing the Landscape, and the Preventing Family Violence & Violence against Women Capability Framework.

Cancellations made at least 14 days prior to the training dates are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made between 13 and 7 days prior to the training dates are eligible for a 50% refund.
